Abstract

Iqbaliyat constitutes a vital and expanding domain of Urdu literature, distinguished by its increasing scholarly depth and intellectual breadth. Allama Muhammad Iqbal was a philosopher of profound stature and a poet of unparalleled genius. Through the medium of his poetry, philosophical discourses, and personal correspondence, he orchestrated a transformative awakening for the Muslim Ummah, specifically galvanizing the Muslims of the Subcontinent. His legacy remains an enduring source of intellectual and spiritual illumination. The analytical study of Iqbal’s ideological frameworks, alongside the technical and aesthetic critique of his creative output, commenced during his lifetime and has since evolved into a rigorous, ongoing tradition. This scholarly pursuit is further augmented by a continuous stream of exegeses and translations. Among the luminaries of Iqbal Studies, Dr. Ehsan Akbar occupies a significant position. While the volume of Dr. Ehsan Akbar’s contributions to Iqbaliyat may be modest, it is characterized by exceptional qualitative merit, serving as an essential catalyst for understanding Iqbal’s complex thought. His poetic rendering of Iqbal’s selected works into Punjabi has earned widespread critical acclaim. Moreover, his objective and scholarly rejoinder to the critique of Iqbal by the renowned progressive critic, Syed Ali Abbas Jalalpuri, is a commendable contribution to the field. The present article offers a comprehensive appraisal of Dr. Ehsan Akbar’s scholarly endeavors in the realm of Iqbal Studies.
