Abstract

This article briefly highlights the origins of the genre of composition in the West and Urdu, followed by a brief discussion of all the debates that have taken place in relation to determining the characteristics of this genre in Urdu.After this, a brief mention is made of the creative and critical efforts that Dr. Wazir Agha has made towards making this genre popular in Urdu. A comprehensive discussion on one of his famous compositions, "Charwaha", has also been made to clarify the characteristics of Dr. Wazir Agha's compositional style.
